The Book Doctor is IN :: September 27 4-6 pm
Join book and paper conservator Lindsey Williams for an informational conversation about book repair.
Each attendee should bring 2 books (max). Your books must be damaged in some way, either structurally, or with some kind of aesthetic damage. Ideally, your two books will be damaged in two different ways, to enrich the discussion.
Ms. Williams will review each book one at a time with the group talking through considerations for each regarding repair or other preservation steps.
Think of this workshop like Show and Learn using the YOUR items.
Each book is unique even if the damage type is similar to another. As the process continues, similar concepts will likely come up repeatedly, opening the floor to discussion about the nuances between individual objects and the differences between conservation, restoration and preventive preservation.
Discussion would likely also include treatment options either by general public or trained practitioners and how to ascertain risks and rewards of each option.
Additional themes that might be included depending on the conversations and interests of the attendees:
-Paths to enter the book conservation field.
-General storage factors to consider.
-Conservation bookbinding styles that don’t always replicate the original style and why.
-How to find a practitioner.
Additionally, Ms. Williams will bring a few examples of treated items to share with the group.
Limited to 10 participants, The Book Doctor is IN will be held at Hive Center for the Book Arts at 840 Custer.
